Warning: Men In Skirts

Fashion is pushing harder than ever the boundaries and norms that years ago put women in skirts and men in slacks.  But as time rolls on and fashion evolves women continue to embrace menswear, but do the men secretly covet what the women wear?  H&M introduced its spring 2010 lookbook a few months ago and many may have been surprised to see pleated skirts accompanying trousers, shorts and harem pants.  But do we think this is a look that will inspire men to abandon their pants for “legless trousers”?

First spotted on the runways of John Gilliano and Comme des Garcons in 2008, the look was unexpected and comical but never caught on. I don’t think anyone was too surprised by that.  But now it seems like it’s getting serious and the designers behind H&M apparently intend on transforming this taboo look into mainstream.

Although this look may have been spotted on the fashionable streets of Europe, here in North America I believe that there is just too much associated with a skirt for men to put aside their egos, and spend the day in crotch-less garments.  But if this look did go mainstream would it be considered cross dressing?  Would people find it offensive?  Would you approve of your mate taking up this style?

Until then Marc Jacobs will no doubt continue to be the poster boy for the man skirt, whether we like it or not.
