True Talk True Queen: Interview With Felicia Leatherwood

There has been so much news recently surrounding Felicia Leatherwood and the beautiful styling of Jill Scott‘s hair as she walked the red carpet  at the NAACP Image Awards and the Why Did I get Married Too Premiere back in March 2010.

Founder of The Natural Hair Care Workshop; a movement making huge waves amongst women and teaching them not only how to care for, but also love their natural locks.  As a woman myself who has chosen to abandon the woes of extensions, the burning hole it had  left in my wallet, and the damage it caused to what God has given me, I was more than pleased to have the opportunity to speak with Felicia about her hair care passion.  And of course, pick up some helpful tips to share with all of my True Queens.

Could you tell us a few things about yourself we may not know?

I started doing hair when I was 12yrs. because I’m tender headed and I was the only one who could do my hair without cussing myself out, lol!

Why are you so passionate about natural hair in particular?

I’m passionate about natural hair because, I’ve seen the hair evolve into stronger healthier hair when it’s in its natural state, then when it has been broken down with chemicals and hot combs.

Can you give us a little insight on what is and what prompted you to start the Loving Your Hair with Natural Care Workshop?

The Natural Hair Care Workshop is…where women with all types of hair come to learn about what’s the best way to love their hair w/the right products and get all of their hair care questions answered as well as learn techniques and styles that would help transition them into having options with their hair.

Why I started the workshops? I started the workshops because I really believe in empowering others to love everything about themselves and see themselves more beautiful every time they look in the mirror.  To never curse their hair and be grateful as well as enjoy what they were born with!

(**Preach Sister!)

We all saw and loved what you did with Jill Scott’s hair, are there any other celebrities you’ve worked with or would like to in the future?

I’ve worked with songstress -Brenda Russell, Sanaa Lathan, Wendy Raqheal Robinson, Terrence Howard, Cedric the Entertainer, Dr. Dre, Method  Man, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Arsenio Hall, Will Smith and Anthony Anderson.
I always wanted to braid Maxwell’s hair, but now that it’s been cut down, I have to forfeit that dream, lol!

What sort of products should women who are trying to transition from and maintain healthy natural locks look for?

Every ones hair requires different care techniques, so you really have to look for products that will have a positive effect on your hair.  Products that moisturize and protect as well as not weighing down the hair or drying it out, when wearing hair in its natural state!

That’s why I love the LRC product line.  Because it works with all types of hair!  You can also go to my facebook fan page (Loving Your Hair with Natural Care Workshop!) and check out the shopping list and care tips that I post daily, to find what would work for your particular needs.

I myself have locs in my head, is there a difference in the types of products women with locs should be using versus those with loose natural tresses?

Depending on the product line…some products can work with both locs and naturalness hair.  LRC’s leave-in conditioner works well on all types of hair and hair styles.  I like to put the leave-in on the locs after shampooing and conditioning.  The LRC line leaves the hair feeling soft and protected from harsh elements of the outdoors.  The LRC Bling spray is the perfect finisher on hair and it’s all natural.  There is no difference in using products for locs vs. kinky curly styles, especially using LRC, because LRC works no matter what state your hair is in!

What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?

My future is filled with being very busy and excited to get the word out about the Natural Hair Care Workshops all over the world!  I want to empower men, women and children to care for their hair, mind and body in a more organic way.  I get very excited when I am asked to bring the Natural Hair Care Workshops to other towns, states and countries.  So I welcome the invitation to bring the Workshop to All of You!
