Canadian Fashion Icon: Jeanne Beker

Jeanne Beker is a Canadian fashion icon, both at home and abroad her name garners international recognition. She’s enhanced the world of fashion especially on the home front on so many levels and is a great inspiration to aspiring models, designers, stylists and journalist alike.   I’ve been watching Jeanne on FT Fashion Television since I was a little girl.  FT is one of the most successful Canadian broadcastings which has aired in over 130 countries worldwide.

At 6:00pm every evening I would sit in front of the television with my dinner plate and indulge in the fantasy land that was Fashion, all mean while listening to Jeanne voicing over the inspiration for each collection, or catching up backstage with the designers to speak one on one.  Jeanne lead FT to unprecedented success which spawned the creation to the FT channel, which is Canada’s only channel dedicated to covering everything from fashion, beauty and design.

Born and raised in Toronto and a mother of two Jeanne found her way to fashion in an unconventional way.  She studied to be a mime believe it or not in Paris before co-Starring on the New Music, hosting CHUM and reporting on CBC radio.  She even went to York University which is steps from my home in Toronto!

I love everything about her from her style, to her bold red lipstick and her uncanny taste for luxury.  Jeanne dishes on the best of the best, the latest trends and event coverage.  She’s rubbed shoulders with Karl Lagerfeld, the late Alexander Mc Queen and countless other designers and heavy weights in the fashion industry.

Jeanne has revolutionized the way we access fashion on the web with her collaborative efforts with major communications mogul of the time MCI, bringing us the first fashion website.  Can you imagine the web without fashion? The web is how I get my daily fix, without it I would surely be lost.

With a number of exemplary successes under her belt including editor-in-chief of FQ Magazine and SIR magazine, a columnist for the Globe and Mail, a published author  and most recognizably as a judge on Canada’s Next Top Model a spinoff of one of my favourite model competitions America’s Next Top Model.

She has been honoured in so many different ways including covering the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and receiving a Crystal award for her contributions to fashion.  Jeanne Beker is truly a Canadian Fashion Icon, and many of the greats to follow will surely call upon her name, for her style, her striking smile and incredible tenacity to survive and thrive in the Fashion industry for so long.
